Parallels Desktop for Mac 3.0 Didn’t Like Vista’s ISO Files

Vista error in Parallels Desktop for Mac 3

I installed a beta release of Windows Vista using Parallels Desktop for Mac 1.0 last year using a Microsoft provided DVD ISO file. So, I thought that installing the production version of Windows Vista using 5 CD ISO files would be a more-or-less similar experience. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Vista’s installer apparently got lost in trying to work with the WIM (Windows Image) file format (introduced along with Vista) when used from inside an ISO file (just a guess, btw). So, next up… Installing from real physical CD discs.

    Hey Todd

Something I found on a similar issue but haven’t actually tried:
    http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/02/10/how-to-install-vista-in-os-x-using-parallels-a-complete-walkthrough/
(Note the ISO option in step 13…not an exact match to your case, but I figure the toggle is worth a try.)

To be honest I have given up on Parallels in favor of VMWare Fusion, even though it is only at RC1. Takes better advantage of the hardware and now that they have Unity enabled, it’s worth another look if you haven’t in awhile.

Now whether the whole virtualization thing is really worth it…well, that’s up for another discussion. Hehe.

I have been running paralels 3.0 on my Mac and had NO issues loading Vista on it. Maybe because it has been out for a while and all the kinks are worked out.

Thanks for the feedback. I just updated my Parallels 3.0 and VMWare Fusion 1.1 to the latest builds this past weekend. Will probably take another run at Vista with one or the other this weekend.
